Travel Information

The University of Hertfordshire is served by major road and motorway networks, with four of the UK's international airports within easy reach. University and public bus services connect the campuses, local town centres and railway stations.

The University is situated 3 miles north of the London orbital motorway (M25) at junction 3 of the A1(M) and is easily accessible by road, rail (Hatfield station) and air (Luton, Stansted, Heathrow, and Gatwick airports).

Bus and Rail Travel

The University is an 8 minute bus ride from Hatfield railway station (bus no. 603, 341, 641). Local train services (WAGN) from Hatfield station run to and from London Kings Cross (22 mins) and London Moorgate (40 mins).

There are also local rail services to and from Cambridge and Peterborough from Hatfield. Direct local trains between Hatfield and Stevenage (15 mins) connect with Intercity services to and from the North of England and Scotland.

The University can also be reached via St Albans City railway station and a 16 minute bus ride (bus no. 602, 655). Train services from St Albans City station (Thameslink) connect with London Thameslink (25 mins), Luton (15 mins), and Bedford (35 mins).

Air Travel

(In the following, possible travel routes from the airports to the University by public transport are explained. For travel by car, please refer to the maps.)

From London Stansted Airport:
The most convenient way to get to Hatfield is by coach, but there is also a rail connection.
By coach: From Stansted airport, there are direct coaches to the University of Hertfordshire, College Lane campus. Two bus lines serve that route, Line 757 (to Oxford) and Line 717 (to Brighton). Travel time is 45 minutes. Each line runs approximately two-hourly during daytime. To see the exact bus times from Stansted to UH, check the National Express Timetables , with start and goal locations Stansted Airport and Hatfield. From College Lane campus there is a shuttle bus service to De Havilland Campus (Line 690).

By train: Theoretically, the journey should take 1:15 hours, but delays are possible. Take the Stansted Express train towards London. Alight at Tottenham Hale and in Tottenham Hale station, take a London Underground ("the tube") Piccadilly Line train westbound to Finsbury Park station. From Finsbury Park station, there are regular trains to Hatfield station. See the on-line timetable service for exact times. From Hatfield Railway Station,  take a bus (lines 602, 655, 341, 641, or 603) to the University of Hertfordshire (alighting at the De Havilland campus, not the College Lane campus). During the day, line 603 is the quickest bus from the railway station to the University. Alternatively take a taxi (e.g. 01707 890095 or 07957 645188).

From London Heathrow Airport:
By coach: There is a direct coach connection, line 717, which connects Heathrow Airport directly to the College Lane Campus of the University of Hertfordshire. Travel time is 55 minutes and they run approximately two-hourly during daytime. To see the exact coach times from Heathrow to UH, check the National Express Timetables, with start and goal locations Heathrow Airport and Hatfield. From College Lane campus there is a shuttle bus service to De Havilland Campus (Line 690).

By train: Take the Heathrow Express to London Paddington. From Paddington take the London Underground (e.g. Circle Line) to London Kings Cross. From London Kings Cross take the train to Hatfield. The journey time should be approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. See the on-line timetable service for exact times.
From Hatfield Railway Station,  take a bus (lines 602, 655, 341, 641, or 603) to the University of Hertfordshire (alighting at the De Havilland campus, not the College Lane campus). During the day, line 603 is the quickest bus from the railway station to the University. Alternatively take a taxi (e.g. 01707 890095 or 07957 645188).

From London Gatwick Airport:
By coach: There is a coach connection, line 717, which connects Gatwick Airport to the College Lane Campus of the University of Hertfordshire. Travel time is 2.5 hours and they run approximately two-hourly during daytime. To see the exact coach times from Gatwick to UH, check the National Express Timetables, with start and goal locations Gatwick Airport and Hatfield.

By train: From Gatwick Airport it is possible to take the train via London to Hatfield. From Gatwick airport take the train to London Victoria and then the London Underground (e.g. Piccadilly line) to Finsbury Park. From Finsbury Park take the train to Hatfield. The journey time should be approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes. See the on-line timetable service for exact times. From Hatfield Railway Station,  take a bus (lines 602, 655, 341, 641, or 603) to the University of Hertfordshire (alighting at the De Havilland campus, not the College Lane campus). During the day, line 603 is the quickest bus from the railway station to the University. Alternatively take a taxi (e.g. 01707 890095 or 07957 645188).

By train: From Luton Airport Parkway station take the Thameslink train to St Albans City Station. From St Albans Station take bus 602 or 655 to the University (alighting at the De Havilland campus, not the College Lane campus). The total journey time should be approximately 45 minutes.
